Trav's Soap Box - A weekly message from the Director
TELLING LIKE IT IS....A unique perspective on police layoffs

"When you're dealing with crime, it's kind of like taking on a home-improvement project. You wouldn't remodel a kitchen with only a hammer. You have to have the right tool, for the right job. We are, by all means, a fully functional police department. By utilizing patrol officers, detectives, patrol cars, motorcycles, and K-9's, we are able to use whatever tools necessary to achieve our mission." Director Travis Cartner, speaking to a tenant safety meeting group at a local apartment complex.

When developing the ANVIS concept, our mission was simple - make a difference in the community.

ANVIS developed the "ANVIS Motorcycle Unit" as another way to achieve that mission. The motorcycles allow us to "squeeze" into 'tight spots' we normally could not patrol. Additionally, the motorcycles allow us to respond to situations, more rapidly, than in a patrol car.

The motorcycles we purchased are 2008 Harley-Davidson Nightsters (with mini-ape handlebars for you motorcycle enthusiast). Although these motorcycles are "Harleys," they are quiet, and allow us to "sneak" up on the would-be criminal.

The motorcycles are outfitted with "Mini-Ape" Handlebars, because it allows us more room to equip the bikes with lighting, and P.A. systems. They are silver and black (ANVIS Company Colors), and are rugged and reliable- just like the officers riding them.

This is the only equipment purchased that differs from equipment used by law enforcement. The Harley Davidson motorcycles used by law enforcement agencies are equipped with fiberglass saddlebags, windshields, and fairings. Their motorcycles are primarily designed for law enforcement officers to enforce "traffic" laws. Our motorcycle unit was designed to catch "bad guys."

In addition, it puts our officers into more contact with residents of our communities, and allows them to become more familiar with the people they are protecting.
